This Centrally Located Part of Town is Known to Long Time Locals as West of the Ashley

Leave downtown and cross over the Westmoreland Bridge to enter West Ashley.  Covered in ancient live oaks and bordered by scenic vistas on the Ashley and Stono Rivers, West Ashley offers homes close to downtown without the South of Broad prices. The Byrnes Down, Moreland and Westwood neighborhoods are within biking distance of Historic Downtown Charleston while also being in close proximity to West Ashley’s popular “designer district” and a Harris Teeter shopping complex. Another popular and growing community in West Ashley is Avondale, offering a variety of homes with lots of character, from the brick ranch to the craftsman bungalow. Avondale is also located across the street from the West Ashley Greenway, a 10.5-mile trail where you can walk, bike, or jog while enjoying the natural beauty of moss-draped live oaks and scenic Lowcounty wetlands. Other classic West Ashley neighborhoods include Sandhurst, Northbridge Terrace and Wespanee Plantation.  These established, family-friendly subdivisions also offer a range of affordable housing options replete with the timeless charm and natural beauty of Charleston. They are also conveniently located close to I-26, providing a quick route out of the city and easy access to Historic Downtown, James Island, and Folly Beach. If you are looking for a newer home then the Grand Oaks Plantation, Hunt Club or Carolina Bay neighborhoods would be good places to look.  These master planned developments are further down Highway 17 South and include excellent family amenities such as walking trails, neighborhood pools and playgrounds for homeowners. They are also close to Bee’s Landing Recreation Center, a popular facility that offers a diverse selection of classes and programs, sports and fitness activities as well as seasonal family events throughout the year.

Beautiful West Ashley provides close proximity to Downtown Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and easy access to some of Charleston’s most popular boutiques and retail stores. With the natural beauty of its rivers, ancient trees, subtropical florae and broad selection of newer and established neighborhoods to choose from, West Ashley living is hard to beat.  Plans are also underway with the West Ashley Revitalization Project, an exciting new effort initiated by city planners that is aimed at preserving the unique character of the area and ensuring its long-term economic stability.
